Every year in this country thousands of children are abused at the hands of an adult they trust. In one of the wealthiest countries in the world, this can not be allowed to continue. Abuse does not know race, nationality, wealth or poverty, religion, or gender. It can happen to anyone.
Every year I teach our children how to stay safe and protect themselves. These lessons, provided through the Diocese of Venice, are just one step in the large awareness that must take place with our children.
Parents, you are your child's first teacher. Many of us do not like to talk about abuse and its dangers; but we must. It needs to be a lesson in our homes just like "look both ways before crossing the street."
If I can be of any assistance to your family, please let me know. If you know or suspect a child is being abused, pick up the phone and dial 1-800-96-ABUSE. You could be saving a life.
